Subject: CPA status but not kept up with continuing ed

The scenario on which I would like feedback is one where the applicant attained a CPA designation but over time did not keep up with the continuing education requirements but wants to include accounting positions in the current job search. This leads me to ask how to display the designation on the resume. Is it misleading to note CPA, or should the applicant qualify it, for example as CPA (inactive)?

I read through some of the replies but not all so bear with me if I am repeating others...this issue is state specific so check with the state society in your state, in CT there is a annual registration process (with a fee $40.00) that permits the use of the CPA designation on correspondence/business cards/resumes/letter head but you can not "practice as a CPA" (hang a shingle/sign returns/be a partner in a firm) that requires a license. There are thousands of CPA's that do not practice as CPA's but they still hold the certification and that is of value to prospective employers.

In New Jersey - we can use CPA (Inactive). If you want to re-activate, you need to meet the annual requirements of CPE. Also, in NJ, you need 120 CPE, triennially, of which, 60 must be in active learning and you must complete 20 CPE per year which must include a 4 CPE ethics class.

I think you can get a free trial. It's not the best designed program, but terrific for the price.

putting inactive on your resume and refraining from using the initials CPA after your name only seems fair to those of us that have kept up with the CPE requirements.
