After a lifetime of serving many types of non profit boards throughout my career, I have been invited to interview to be considered for a position on a public board. I am writing this post to ask members for advice on how to pass the telephone part of the interview and proceed to the next step. Any help from the mundame to specific would be greatly appreciated. The company is involved with investments in private real estate and is very attuned to the hi tech world.

If I were in your position, I would call one of the better headhunters who knows me and who also does Board searches. They will likely be very happy to share a few tidbits of advice. Also, they will know better than most others what you should be ready for as they are often on the other end of the phone and are asking the questions.
Good luck!

Are you the Aerosonic Purcell? If you would give me some names of those headhunters you mentioned I would be appreciative.
Thanks, Andy

Ask about the D&O insurance. If you have a financial background, you will likely be asked to serve on the audit committee. You will supervise the audit firm and review the company's financial statements. Relevant industry experience and accounting experience will be of interest. If you have contacts at their audit firm, you may be able to get some background. Any relationships with other directors would obviously be helpful. There can be significant risk if the company is not solid, so you should do your due diligence and be careful.
